Hepatitis Co-Infection

A5239: NEW STRATEGY FOR TREATMENT OF HEPATITIS C IN HIV+ PEOPLE WHO DID NOT RESPOND TO PRIOR HEPATITIS C TREATMENT:

You may be eligible for this study if you:

  • Have been previously treated for HCV with PEG-interferon and ribavirin but you did not respond
  • Have insulin resistance (we will do the test)
  • Do not have diabetes

Study regimen for all subjects:
Step 1 - 30 mg tablet of pioglitazone (a medicine used to treat diabetes) daily for 24 to 28 weeks.
Step 2 - 30 mg tablet of pioglitazone with PEG-interferon and ribavirin for up to an additional 48 weeks.

A5269: NEW STRATEGY FOR HEPATITIS C TREATMENT: NITAZOXANIDE IN ADDITION TO STANDARD HEPATITIS C TREATMENT FOR HIV+ PEOPLE

You may be eligible for this study if you:

  • Have had no prior Hepatitis C treatment
  • Have a T-cell (CD4) count 200 cells/mm3 or higher
  • Have not had liver failure

Study regimen: All subjects will receive nitazoxanide (NTZ) for 4 weeks, followed by continued NTZ plus standard of care peginterferon alfa-2a and ribavirin for up to 48 weeks.
